My husband and I just returned from a visit to London so that is why I am a little late posting about this. Roger Corman made such great films. Were some of them cheesy? Of course, but that is what made them fun.
Deathrace 2000 has always been one of my favourite dystopian films because just the premise of it is so outrageous; the drivers score points when they hit and kill people with their cars. Kill an elderly person seventy-five and older? You get a solid 100 points. It also stars a young Sylvester Stallone and he is funny as hell in it. I have also always loved Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, the film he made featuring The Ramones. My family’s area of San Francisco received cable pretty early on and it would be shown constantly. So much so that I would bring out my Barbies to play along with the film.
Of course you can’t talk about Corman’s films without mentioning his work with Vincent Price. My personal favourite is The Raven because it is a great horror comedy, one of the best ever made. The Masque Of The Red Death is also very, very good and is genuinely a bit scary; you can’t escape death, even if you are wealthy and hiding behind castle walls.
So, goodbye Roger. You lived a very long life and your contributions to the horror genre will never be forgotten.
